Men have called me mad; but the question is not yet settled, whether madness is or is not the loftiest intelligence– whether much that is glorious– whether all that is profound– does not spring from disease of thought– from moods of mind exalted at the expense of the general intellect.
Edgar Allan Poe
Does the world really need another blog? No. The internet is replete with various forums designed to share the mindless ramblings of people who clearly have nothing better to do with their time. In addition to blogs, we have social media forums such as Twitter. Does anyone really need to know that you just finished a grilled cheese sandwich and are now settling in to watch the latest episode of Modern Family? Spare us all! So why another blog? My intention is not to add to the noise. There will be no inane postings about the minutiae of my life. Here we discuss philosophy, theology, literature and culture – the things that truly matter in life. And by we, I mean you and me together. I may initiate the conversation, but I invite you to share your own thoughts and insights. We can learn from one another and expand our intellectual and spiritual horizons.
I have considered the fact that no one may actually be interested in anything I have to say. That is a risk I am willing to take. No matter, because the reality is that I am doing this for myself. This is my outlet – my sounding board for all my intellectual eccentricities, heresies and solutions to the worlds greatest problems. If you have known me for any length of time, you may already be familiar with some of the ideas I share. I have discovered that I am awfully good at posing deep thoughts, not so good at refining those thoughts and coming to a clearly articulated position. This is my effort to take all my half-baked ideas and hopefully discover truth – with your help, of course. There is certainly no more noble a venture.
I have several topics that I am currently finalizing before I post. The most notable is on homosexuality and gay marriage, certain to cause plenty of discussion. Don’t prejudge me! I may end up surprising you. The title of this blog should give you an idea of my approach to topics. I will expound on the meaning of it at some time in the future. Suffice it to say that I will rarely be taking an officious stance. The goal here is to discuss, to refine, and to learn from one another. Beyond that, I will be revisiting my views on predestination and free will. A favorite topic of mine. Additionally, I taught a class on Art and Aesthetics this past fall and have plenty to say on that topic as well. It was a subject I knew little of prior to taking it on, and I still can’t say I have a firm grasp of it. Be forewarned! I will probably post some thoughts on various Bible passages before getting to the more philosophical matter, just as a means of jump starting this whole effort and loosening up my rusty writing skills. My goal is to update at least once a week.
